Keir Starmer is set to assume the role of Britain’s next prime minister after the Labour Party’s resounding victory in the UK general elections, securing a substantial majority in the 650-seat parliament.
The Conservatives, led by Rishi Sunak, experienced their worst electoral performance in the party’s extensive history, as voters held them accountable for the cost of living crisis, inadequate public services, and a string of scandals.
Sunak, visibly disheartened, acknowledged the defeat and revealed that he had reached out to Starmer to offer his congratulations on the victory. “Today power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner, with goodwill on all sides,” Sunak said.
“There is much to learn and reflect on and I take responsibility for the loss to the many good hardworking Conservative candidates … I am sorry.”
The outgoing House of Commons included 15 MPs of Indian descent, and this figure is expected to increase. In the UK General Election 2024, an impressive 107 British-Indian candidates are competing for the 680 seats up for grabs.

“Today, power will change hands in a peaceful and orderly manner with goodwill on all sides,” said Sunak, as his Conservative party suffered a historic defeat to Labour.
Shivani Raja
Shivani Raja has won Leicester East gaining the seat from Labour party. The fight in Leicester East had a host of heavyweights in the fight including former MPs Claude Webbe and Keith Vaz who contested as Independents. Shivani Raja, a Leicester-born who studied in the city at Herrick Primary, Soar Valley College, Wyggeston and Queen Elizabeth II college. She also graduated with First Class Honours in Cosmetic Science from De Montfort University (DMU).
Kanishka Narayan
Former Welsh Sec Alun Cairns loses out to Labour’s Kanishka Narayan, of Indian origin who becomes Wales’ first MP from a minority ethnic background. Narayan was born in India and moved to Cardiff when he was 12. He got into Eton on a scholarship, went on to study at Oxford and then Stanford before becoming a civil servant.
Suella Braverman
Indian-origin Suella Braverman has won the Fareham and Waterlooville seat.
Braverman was replaced by James Cleverly as interior minister in the last re-shuffle of the last Sunak cabinet. She had courted controversy after suggesting that the Metropolitan Police were too lenient with pro-Palestine protesters.
Gagan Mohindra
Gagan Mohindra, a Conservative Party member, has emerged victorious securing 16,458 votes. His closest rival, Sally Symington from the Liberal Democrats, received 12,002 votes, placing her in second position.
Mohindra, who comes from a Punjabi Hindu background, previously served as the Member of Parliament for South West Hertfordshire until the dissolution of Parliament on May 30. With his re-election, he will continue to represent the constituents of his constituency in the House of Commons.
Navendu Mishra
Navendu Mishra, the sitting Member of Parliament for Stockport representing the Labour Party, has won. Mishra received a mandate from the voters, garnering 21,787 ballots cast in his favour, thus securing his return to Westminster.
Having first won the Stockport seat in 2019, Mishra, who is of Indian descent, has been given the opportunity to continue representing the constituency in Parliament.
Satvir Kaur
Satvir Kaur, a member of the Labour Party, won the Southampton Test constituency. She secured her seat with a margin of 15,945 votes. Kaur’s success in Southampton Test follows the tenure of Alan Whitehead, a veteran Labour MP who had represented the constituency for an extended period. Whitehead had decided to step down, paving the way for a new representative.
