Nashik civic body mops up Rs 40 crore property tax via amnesty scheme since Oct 1, – Homevior

NASHIK: Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) collected Rs 40 crore of a total of Rs 600 crore property tax arrears through its amnesty scheme since Oct 1.

In the last three weeks, NMC raked in Rs13 crore via the scheme. The amount Rs 600 crore includes Rs 268 crore as the penalty.

NMC imposes a monthly penalty of 2% on unpaid property taxes and additional charges for notices and warrants issued to defaulters. Under the current amnesty scheme introduced on Oct 1, defaulters can receive up to a 95% penalty waiver, if they settle their property tax dues by Dec 31 and an 85% penalty waiver if they pay the tax in Jan next year.

NMC officials said their move to introduce the amnesty scheme yielded positive results as they could retrieve around Rs 40 crore from the defaulters. Earlier, the concession in the penalty amount for the month of Dec was only 85%, which increased up to 95%, said NMC officials.

In 2021, the civic body introduced the amnesty scheme for the property tax defaulters for two months (Oct-Nov), but it received a poor response as it collected only Rs 14.86 crore.

“The response this year is good compared to 2021. We are expecting around 25-30 crores more in the remaining few days up to Jan 31 next year,” said an official.

NMC has set the property tax collection target of Rs 250 crore for the current financial year. So far in the current financial year, the civic body collected over Rs 189 crore property tax, against Rs 155 crore during the corresponding period in last financial year.
