MUMBAI: In a meeting chaired by additional municipal commissioner Ashwini Joshi at the BMC headquarters on Friday, it was decided to conduct a robust campaign against unauthorised constructions across Mumbai in Jan, Feb, and March.

According to the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act 1888, Section 152 (A), there is a provision to impose a 200% penalty on property tax for unauthorised constructions. Accordingly, while taking demolition action, notices of penalty will be issued to unauthorised constructions, and the penalty collection process should be conducted.

The property tax collection should be accelerated before the end of the financial year, i.e., by March 31, 2025, it was decided.

Assistant commissioner (Encroachment Removal) Vinayak Vispute stated that a robust campaign against unauthorised constructions in the municipal area will be conducted continuously from January to March. All designated officers have been instructed to personally monitor and promptly act against any unauthorised constructions.

Instructions have been given to department-level officers to create a time-bound programme for the collection of punitive property tax on unauthorised constructions, said Vispute.
