HYDERABAD: HYDRAA officials on Sunday demolished an illegal five-storey building in Ayyappa Society in Madhapur of Serilingampally, citing multiple violations of building regulations and court orders.

HYDRAA commissioner AV Ranganath, who oversaw the operation, said, “This structure was a glaring example of violations at multiple levels, posing serious risks to public safety and environmental health.”

The unauthorised building, constructed on a 684-square-yard plot near 100 feet road, included a cellar, five floors and a pent house. “The cellar was illegally converted into a kitchen, and the entire structure lacked parking facilities,” Ranganath explained. “It was clearly intended for commercial use without obtaining proper permissions.”

Highlighting severe breaches of building norms, Ranganath noted, “There was absolutely no setback space around the building, which is a mandatory requirement. More alarmingly, faecal matter was flowing directly onto the road due to the absence of a proper drainage system.”

Environmental concerns also played a critical role in the decision to demolish the structure, the officials said. “The building was actively polluting a nearby lake due to improper waste management,” Ranganath said, adding that it had no authorised utility connections despite being close to completion.

The action followed a thorough review of show-cause notices issued by the GHMC (Chandanagar circle) and directives from the Telangana high court. A joint team of HYDRAA, revenue department, and GHMC officials executed the demolition in response to persistent complaints from local residents.

This operation is part of HYDRAA’s ongoing crackdown on unauthorised constructions across the city. Commissioner Ranganath warned, “Similar action will be taken against other illegal structures that endanger public safety and violate building regulations.”
