NEW DELHI: Delhi govt plans to renovate and distribute 52,000 flats, which were constructed a decade ago but now lie abandoned, to slum-dwellers, chief minister Rekha Gupta said on Tuesday. “Delhi govt is dedicated to completing these works.

A fund of Rs 700 crore in the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has been allocated to Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) for the welfare of those residing in slums,” she added.

After inspecting and inaugurating development projects in the Shalimar Bagh assembly constituency area, the chief minister said, “On Tuesday, we started the work of constructing a proper drainage system in this slum. ‘Achhe din’ (good days) are beginning for slum-dwellers after many years; work will actually be done for their colonies.”

Gupta also criticised the previous AAP govt for neglecting the communities living in the area. She said that the current BJP govt, under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, is determined to bring real, ground-level transformation. “Previous govts did not care about slum-dwellers; they only used them as a vote bank. They instilled fear in them that BJP would clear the slums. The beginning of the work here is a message to the people in slums that under the leadership of PM Modi, BJP govt is taking care of every poor person. It is ensuring basic facilities, water, parks and toilets for them,” Gupta said.”Today, newly-constructed works in 40 lanes at Ayurvedic Camp, developed by DUSIB, were officially completed and handed over for public use,” she added.

Among the other projects inaugurated by Gupta was a new water supply schedule for Shalimar Bagh residents, providing water twice daily — from 6am to 8am and for half an hour in the evening. Under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, initiated in 2005, the state and central governments jointly planned and funded the construction of 52,584 residential units across 14 sites in Delhi since 2008. However, the authorities have allocated merely 4,833 flats, which is less than 10% of the total units. The residential units share identical architectural specifications, featuring a bedroom-cum-hall, a bathroom and a kitchen. The housing complexes consist of four-storey structures, with each floor accommodating four residential units. The units remain at various construction phases. Over 90% of the dwellings are deteriorating, and stand vacant and unutilised. “The primary objective of the inspection was to identify public grievances firsthand and ensure their prompt resolution,” said Gupta.
