BENGALURU: Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) collected Rs 4,284 crore in property tax between April 1 and Nov 30, 2024. The collection includes the recovery of about Rs 700 crore arrears. The civic body received Rs 521.3 crore tax through offline payments and a staggering Rs 3,762.8 crore online.

Munish Moudgil, special commissioner (revenue), BBMP, attributed this success to enhanced efficiency in tax administration, improved digital platforms, and proactive measures to address arrears and tax revisions. “We took concentrated efforts to streamline tax collection and expand taxpayer base through systematic revisions and enhanced digital accessibility. The overwhelming preference for online payments, which constitutes nearly 88% of the total collection, indicates the growing acceptance and ease of digital transactions among citizens,” he said.

Among the zones, Mahadevapura stood out as the largest contributor of professional tax, accounting for a total collection of Rs 1,148 crore, followed by east zone with Rs 710 crore and Bommanahalli with Rs 419 crore.

On the other hand, Dasarahalli registered the lowest collection at Rs 136.2 crore, raising concerns about potential inefficiencies or a smaller taxpayer base in the region.

Moudgil emphasized the importance of outreach campaigns, particularly in zones like Dasarahalli, to improve compliance and encourage digital adoption. “We made significant progress, but there is room for improvement. Our focus remains on transparency, compliance, and citizen convenience,” he said.

However, challenges remain in recovering the pending arrears of Rs 400-450 crore and addressing issues in zones with lower contributions. “By March 2025, we hope to collect Rs 5,200 crore property tax,” Moudgil said.
