COLVA: At an extraordinary gram sabha meeting on Thursday, Benaulim villagers unanimously resolved to oppose Goa Tourism Development Corporation’s (GTDC) move to handover land developed for parking to a private player to build a starred hotel.
Villagers warned that moves to keep the panchayat in the dark while drawing up agreements with private parties does not sit well with locals, and if the hotel proposal moves forward, they will be forced to protest.
A resolution was also passed to form a task force and initiate dialogue with the chief minister and the tourism minister to convey the sentiment of the village.
A villager said that govt had acquired the land at a meagre rate to create tourism-related infrastructure and ever since the land was used for parking vehicles. The proposed hotel project by GTDC, the local added is being opposed as villagers point out that the western side of the property is ecologically sensitive and needs to be protected.
