MUMBAI: The BMC has released another list of major defaulters who owe the civic body collectively Rs 222 crore as property tax arrears.
The civic body has warned that if the tax is not paid within the prescribed period, as per the provisions of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, the said property will be seized and auctioned under Sections 204, 205, and 206 of the MMC Act. Property tax and payment of tax should be made within 90 days of receipt of the bill.
Officials of the Tax Assessment and Collection Department of the Municipal Corporation follow up for payment of property tax by contacting and communicating with the property owner. If the property tax is still not paid, a ‘demand letter’ is sent, and in the next phase, a final notice of 21 days is given to the property holder. Subsequently, seizure of property of the defaulters and auction of the property are carried out.
The top 10 property tax defaulters as of Nov 21 include HDIL Ltd — Rs 32 crore, Kamala Mills Ltd — Rs 31 crore, Wadhwa Deserve — Rs 26 crore, Kamala Mills Ltd — Rs 24 crore, Govindram Brothers Ltd — Rs 22 crore, His Holiness Sardar Tahir Saifuddin Sahib — Rs 20 crore, Galaxy Corporation — Rs 19 crore, Suraj Handa, Vishnu Prasad — Rs 18 crore, Ariston Developers Private Limited — Rs 16 crore, and Omkar Developers Pvt Ltd — Rs 15 crore.
