KALYAN: After last month’s Bombay high court order, Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) has begun the process to demolish 47 of the 65 illegal buildings constructed by developers who forged RERA certificate documents.
The action will affect around 6,500 people. According to KDMC officials, since people live in these buildings, they will first disconnect electricity and water connections before demolishing the structures.
Earlier, KDMC demolished 10 buildings out of these 65, while no action was taken on 5 buildings because they were built within the limits of MIDC. Two building names were repeated in lists, and one building was not built.
The entire scam came to light last year when social worker and architect of Kalyan, Sandeep Patil exposed it and complained to KDMC.
But when the corporation did not act, he moved the high court.
After this, KDMC filed two FIRs against builders. Later, the Thane police formed an SIT that arrested 15 people, including some builders and others for making fake documents.
KDMC demolished about 10 buildings in which no one lived, out of which 6 were completely demolished.
KDMC Commissioner Indurani Jakhar said that the action got delayed due to code of conduct for the Lok Sabha elections, then the rains, and then the code of conduct for the assembly elections. However, now the concerned departments have been informed to cut off electricity and water connections to vacate them. Jakhar further said, “A large posse of policemen will ensure security arrangements.”
However, speaking to TOI, Sandeep Patil said, “KDMC should take action on all the buildings as per the court’s order. At the same time, the people living in these buildings who got cheated due to the negligence of the builder, KDMC, and RERA officials should be compensated because they purchased these properties due to these officials’ mistakes.”
After hearing the news of the planned demolition, people living in these buildings said they feel cheated and are planning to oppose it. One of them said, “Like me, many of our building residents have purchased flats after checking the building RERA certificate and permission documents given by the builder who cheated us. I demand the high court, instead of demolishing these buildings, should punish those responsible.”
